Frequently Asked Questions About Our Emergency Eye Wash Station
Where should an emergency eye wash station be located?
Based on OSHA regulations (29 CFR 1910.151(c)) and ANSI/ISEA Z358.1), an emergency eye wash station should be located within the work area of employees who are most at risk of exposure to hazardous materials, and it should be reachable within 10 seconds of exposure. This typically means no more than 55 feet from the hazard. The wash station should also be on the same level as the potential hazard, and workers should have a clear path to the unit with no obstructions. The emergency eyewash station should also be clearly labeled with visible signage and placed in an area with adequate lighting. Our emergency eyewash and safety shower stations are trailer-mounted, making it easy to remain compliant by placing them where they’re needed most.
How quickly should an emergency eyewash station be accessible during an incident?
Your wash station should be placed where it is accessible within 10 seconds of a chemical exposure. This typically translates to about 55 feet when walking at a comfortable pace. Each second beyond that greatly increases the risk of serious or permanent injury to the eye or skin. Once activated, your station should deliver a continuous flow of tepid water at a rate of at least 0.4 gallons per minute for 15 minutes. The path from the exposure potential to the eyewash station should also be free of obstructions, and the valve should activate with a single motion within 1 second.
What types of hazards require an emergency eyewash and safety shower system?
Work environments where employees are exposed to injurious, corrosive, or hazardous materials require suitable emergency flushing facilities. This can include industries such as construction, oil and gas, automotive, and others. Examples of caustic materials may include chemicals, acids, alkalis, industrial cleaning solvents, or battery acid. Job sites where full-body exposure is possible should have a full emergency eyewash and safety shower station, whereas areas where only the eyes are at risk of exposure may only need an eyewash station. Our portable eye washing stations meet these requirements.
